Red Bridge Golf & Country Club. Breathtakingly beautiful and often heartbreakingly challenging.  Course architect, David Postlethwait, has sculpted from the naturally beautiful property, one of the most exceptional courses in the greater Charlotte area.

Red Bridge is an amazing track.  It is over 6,800 yards long with subtle, but distinct topography changes, water holes created by a natural stream that winds throughout the course, unexpected landscape and hardscape elements, and 18 exquisite holes that end with velvety MiniVerde greens.

Red Bridge Golf and Country Club does enforce a dress code.  Please No Denim or Tee Shirts.  All shirts must have a colar or mock neck.

Any time you call an 800 number

Any time you call an 800 number
(for a credit card, banking, charter communications,
health and other insurance, computer help desk, etc.)
and you find that you're talking to a foreign customer service representative
(perhaps in India, Philippines, Mexico, Honduras, Dominican Republic, etc.), please consider doing the following:

After you connect and you realize that the customer service representative

is not from the USA (you can always ask if you are not sure about the accent),
please, very politely (this is not about trashing other cultures)
say, "I'd like to speak to a customer service representative in

the United States of America."

The rep might suggest talking to his/her manager,
but, again, politely say, "Thank you, but I'd like to speak to a customer service representative in the USA."
YOU WILL BE IMMEDIATELY CONNECTED TO A REP IN THE USA.
That's the rule and the LAW.

It takes less than one minute to have your call re-directed to the USA.
Tonight when I got redirected to a USA rep, I asked again to make sure -

and yes, she was from Fort Lauderdale.

Imagine what would happen if every US citizen insisted on talking to only

US phone reps from this day on..
Imagine how that would ultimately impact the number of US jobs that

would need to be created ASAP.
If I tell 10 people to consider this and you tell 10 people to consider doing this -

see what I mean...it becomes an exercise in viral marketing 101.

Remember - the goal here is to restore jobs back here at home -

not to be abrupt or rude to a foreign phone rep.
You may even get correct answers, good advice, and solutions to your problem -
in real American English.

Roger Hypes will be sharing some human interest stories of people, events, and places of our Locust community.

One of the definitions of community is the area itself; people with common interests living in a particular area. The Remember When… column should help us better understand the history, people and happenings of Locust, the place we call home.

Remember When…will help us all to take the time out of our busyness to reflect, reminisce, think back, recollect, go over in the memory and hopefully, be able to share a smile of a memory to make us better appreciate the present.  Take a deep breath, lay in the grass and look up in the sky of the cloud shapes, or the stars at night.

I would ask that if you have an event, a crossroads, a person that has helped create the history of Locust, get in touch with Roger Hypes (rogerhypes234@gmail.com.   “Remember When…” will not be in every week update of Locust Patch, but when stories are available and to give the story the value it deserves.  Be thinking as I feel this will be a good way for all of us to appreciate what we have, and where we live.

BURR RECIEVES RECOGINITION AS A CONSERVATIVE LEADER IN THE HOUSE

I am excited to report to you that I have received the American Conservative Union's 2011 Defender of Liberty Award for my strong support of conservative principles on a wide range of issues during the 2011 session of the General Assembly.

The award highlights my 100 percent score on the ACU's first-ever rating of the North Carolina Legislature. I was honored to receive the recognition at a reception held at the North Carolina General Assembly by ACU National Chairman, Al Cardenas.

Founded in 1964, the ACU represents the views of Americans who are concerned with economic growth through lower taxes and reduced government spending and the issues of liberty, personal responsibility, traditional values and national security.

ACU first began rating members of Congress in 1971. Since then, their ratings system has become the most important conservative measuring stick in American politics - the gold standard for voters seeking more information on their representatives' records.

The ACU has taken this highly touted congressional rating standard to state legislatures for the first time ever, grading members on their votes on key conservative issues. In the first year of this new initiative, the ACU is grading state legislators in the critical battleground states of Florida, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia.

You have probably heard of one of the ACU's annual events, the Conservative Political Action Conference, more commonly known as CPAC. Information about the ACU and to view my ranking and the rankings of other North Carolina legislators can be found at www.conservative.org.

Two other rankings were also recently released. The first, from the well-respected North Carolina conservative think-tank Civitas, presented me with high marks, a grade "A," for my conservative stance on legislation. Overall my conservative score from Civitas rose from my first term. This was also a great honor.

A third group that I recently received high marks from, was the North Carolina FreeEnterprise Foundation. The organization released their business ratings of the 2011 North Carolina General Assembly, in November, which provided an analysis of the actions and attitudes of state lawmakers toward the interests and concerns of the State's business community.

The business ratings were derived from a collection of the voting records of state lawmakers on key business issues, as well as the informed opinions of North Carolina business leaders representing a wide range of industries, interests and geographic areas across the State.

Members are scored then named either "base" for a high score towards NC's business community, "swing" for a member that could go either way, or "occasional" for members who rarely vote for business friendly legislation. I received the "base" rating for my high score because I demonstrated a consistent commitment to our state's business community and the principals of the free enterprise system.

I am pleased that for the first time ever, a majority of members of both the House and Senate received high scores for standing up for conservative principles. I am certainly proud of my high scores from both conservative and business groups alike. Without a doubt, these three groups recognize that the current majority in the North Carolina General Assembly is moving our State in the right direction with the goal of building a long lasting job-creating environment through smaller government, less regulation, and lower taxes. We have come a long way this year, but we still have plenty of work to do in the future.

If you are interested in reviewing my entire voting record, please visit www.ncleg.net.

    January 25, 2012

Energy costs have risen sharply in recent years, fueled by everything from rogue foreign governments to too many people in the United States government lining their own pockets. Few people recognize that we're an oil producing nation, and this past year we've set new records in oil and gas production—but I believe more must be done. For every step we take in the right direction, it seems that failed policies and political games take us three steps back. I want to take this opportunity to lay out some aspects of a comprehensive Energy plan that I support and believe will show positive results immediately—lowering costs, creating jobs and giving working families and small businesses the only thing they really want from government: a fair shot.

Keystone XL will create American jobs

This week brought news of the denial of the Keystone XL oil pipeline permit. I support this project and will continue to work for its eventual approval. The partisan gamesmanship and political posturing that surrounded the debate ultimately harmed the very last group of people who deserve it—American workers. This could be a missed opportunity that would create jobs immediately here in America, producing oil on our continent and keeping it here at home. We've already seen threats from China to step ahead of us and work to purchase this energy, a sad and dangerous reality of the cheap domestic oil we're set to miss out on if Washington doesn't get its act together.

The jobs that the Keystone XL pipeline will create are good opportunities for not only the prospective workers, but their families and communities. The House Energy and Commerce Committee estimates that the immediate impact of the Keystone XL pipeline could create thousands of jobs day one, and this is not an opportunity we can afford to waste. But the ongoing blame game in Washington continues to have a harmful effect on our economy, no matter which side you're on or who is to blame. Blame will never lower our gas prices, or the growing heating and oil bills so many of our seniors must find ways to afford, nor will it put food on our tables or clothe our children. We have to find a solution to get this project moving ahead and stop the bickering.

Drill here. Drill now. Pay less.

We need an energy plan that works for American families. For far too long, we've kowtowed to nations like Saudi Arabia and Venezuela, our only interest being the fulfillment of our country's apparent addiction to high priced energy. If we don't preserve our domestic supply, and use it right here, we only end up further distancing ourselves from a solution. Selling our domestic oil to foreign nations, only to then have them sell it back to us at a higher rate, makes no economic sense and also shows little common sense on our part. We need to drill here, drill now and pay less—all at the benefit of our American workers and the American economy. We can safely and securely provide our nation with needed resources without harming the beautiful Carolina coast.

    The Pickens Plan

Our nation has been blessed with an abundance of other sources of energy, from wind and solar to natural gas off our shores. I've long supported T. Boone Pickens' plan to increase our use of natural gas and incentivize its implementation. I was proud to cosponsor this plan in the 111th Congress, and I'm proud to be a cosponsor of it again in the 112th. The plan itself does not even call for an increase in natural gas supply, but rather an increase in the means and methods in which its use can be implemented. If we combined this common sense approach with an additional increase in natural gas recovery, we could see the benefits multiply exponentially. A reduction in our reliance on foreign oil, paired with lower oil prices and an affordable new form of energy, would cut costs for families and small businesses and create jobs in a growing and adapting new domestic industry. This is a common sense plan that many throughout our district support, and one I'll continue to support.

Stand up to China and see American-made solar panels power the world

While the International Trade Commission has made some recent progress in their ongoing investigation of illegal "dumping" of Chinese solar panels in US markets, yet another effort by China to flood our markets here with cheap products, there's still more work to be done. The Chinese government subsidizes its solar panel industry with over 30 billion dollars a year, and almost every product they create gets dumped in our markets. We have our own solar panel manufacturers right here in North Carolina, including many in our area like SBM Solar in Concord and Sencera in Charlotte, and we need to buy American and support them with a fair opportunity in our markets. China has tried to game the system at each and every turn, and it's time we put our foot down. We need our own Department of Commerce to immediately finalize their investigation and put pressure on the WTO to impose tariffs and find a way to block this assault on American jobs and business.

    Our opportunity is here

We've seen failures in government hurt our economy before. Just as NAFTA and CAFTA shifted millions upon millions of our manufacturing jobs elsewhere, leaving our economy behind long before the recession started, so too will a failure to lead on energy. We need to take steps each and every day towards providing opportunity for the generations that follow us, and a smart and comprehensive energy plan will do just that. I'll continue to push for these measures at every opportunity, and I'll take the common sense ideas and solutions that I hear from all of you here at home back with me to Washington. Our families and small businesses deserve solutions, not bickering.

    This Weekend in Stanly County
    By Bridget Huckabee

There are a variety of activities offered by Stanly County throughout the year. They include International Horse Trials, wine festivals, tractor pulls, theatrical events, sporting events, and much more. For unique entertainment there’s the hugely popular Badin Road Drive-in Theater and the monthly Oakboro Cruise-in that, in the summer months, includes the one-of-a-kind Burn-out.

Staffed by volunteers, the Cruise-in began in 2004 to help re-vitalize Oakboro’s downtown. It surpassed all expectations and is now the largest event of its kind in North Carolina. It is held on the fourth Friday of every month.
This Friday, the crowd will start gathering around 3 pm and by starting time at 5 pm the downtown streets in Oakboro will be lined with a variety of unique old cars and trucks. There are food vendors, musical entertainment and lots of photo opportunities. Depending on the weather, anywhere from 350 to 500 cars will show up to show off their gleaming chrome and immaculate paint and interiors.

Save the date of the fourth Friday in April when the Burn-out event joins the Cruise-in. This starts at 9 pm and features the unexplainable fascination of watching cars and trucks with locked brakes spin their tires until they quite literally burn. Smoke rises and the crowd cheers. On the fourth Friday of the month on a warm evening in summer as many as 6,000 spectators may well turn up for this dual event.
Basketball is the name of the game in Misenheimer this Saturday as the Pfeiffer Men’s and Pfeiffer Women’s Basketball teams take on their opponents in the Pfeiffer University gymnasium. The women take on Belmont Abbey Women’s Basketball team at 5:30 pm and at 7:30 pm the men take on Belmont Abbey Men’s Basketball team. Take a ride out to Misenheimer to cheer on the local teams.

Now here is a Saturday event that may require some preparation; a 19.7 mile run from the Albemarle YMCA to the top of Morrow Mountain…and back. Starting time is 5:30 am. The well-named Fellowship of the Idiot Run is one of the most scenic runs in the Central Piedmont region so be sure to bring your camera. There is no charge to enter, but donations are welcome and go to local charities. First timers earn a free Fellowship of the Idiot t-shirt upon completion of the run and a certificate that officially certifies them as an idiot. Runners are asked to respect the distance to run and to be sure they are in shape. For those truly dedicated runners this is a great last long training run before the Myrtle Beach Marathon in February where many of our local stalwarts compete.

For the rest of the weekend there’s hiking and fishing, weather permitting, and if indoors is more to your taste at this time of the year there are plenty of shops and restaurants to try. We also have walking trails, antique trails and winery trails to explore. Come and find your own favorite trail right here in Stanly County.
